Have you ever wanted something so much, prayed for it and God didn't answer your prayer in the way that you wanted it? If you have, you are definitely not alone. But we must always remember that “in all things God works for the good of those who love him.” We don't understand why things work out the way they do, but God has a plan for our lives. In Cathy Marie Hake's most recent book, Bittersweet, it’s a lesson to be learned. Set in the 1860s, Laney McCain is a young woman who has always admired her brother's best friend Galen. Galen sees Laney as nothing more than "like a sister." Laney succeeds in making him start to see her as a potential wife. But just as things are looking like they might work out and the couple will wed, Galen makes a discovery. It seems that the Grubb siblings have taken up residence on one of the corners of the O'Sullivan's land. Having a soft heart and a love for Christ, Galen allows them to continue to live there as long as Ishmael helps him with his work. Ivy deals with their demanding father and his "business." There is a fire on the land and the cause is mysterious as is the identity of the father of the baby that Ivy finds herself pregnant with. She sets out to do some deceiving of her own in an effort to help her brother and keep her family intact. Bittersweet is a story with a very strong Christian message. I found the book very encouraging, that no matter how many times Galen invites the Grubbs to discover the peace he has in his Lord, he keeps trying. There is definitely love in this community. Even if they don't understand why some circumstances have taken place, they show Christian love to each other. Cathy Marie Hake has done it again! I found myself unable to lay this book down from the very first chapter to the very last page. I sincerely hope she continues to write many more enchanting novels like Bittersweet. If anyone loves Historical inspirational fiction, this is an awesome book for them. If you enjoy a good love story, this is the one. Sometimes we all have to wait upon the Lord and He gives us what we want, but it’s on His timeline not our own. Publisher: Bethany House Publishers
