Hours after Catherine Newbury meets an intriguing American architectural student, Carter Danby, at her home in England, her father, a wealthy merchant, is wrongly accused of a heinous crime. Newbury is imprisoned, but not before he bundles his daughter off to America with two trusted servants. Five years later in Philadelphia, where Catherine has been posing as the daughter of her servants, she desperately works as a dress designer and seamstress with hopes to prove her father’s innocence and gain his freedom before it is too late. Carter, now a promising architect and son of a wealthy but unscrupulous Philadelphian businessman, meets Catherine when he escorts his mother and sister to her workplace to buy new gowns. He doesn’t remember his earlier encounter with Catherine, but he’s smitten and begins to pursue her. Catherine hasn’t forgotten him, but fearful that he will discover her questionable past, she fights her own attraction and resolutely resists him. But he doesn’t give up, and without her knowledge, becomes her protector. When a jealous co-worker discovers Catherine’s past and tries to blackmail her, Catherine and her servants flee to New York. Aching for Carter but worried about her father, Catherine is determined to return to England to save him, even if it jeopardizes her own safety and freedom, and permanently severs her relationship with the man she loves. A LADY OF HIGH INTENT reveals the difficulties that single women of the working classes in Philadelphia in the mid-1800s had to endure. Our heroine’s lot is arduous and wearing, but she adorns herself with a reverent and chaste behavior that not only pleases the Lord, but reveals her goodness, strong sense of integrity, and faith to others. Like Sarah in 1 Peter 3, her gentle and quiet spirit reveals the hidden person of her heart. Even so, evil-doers work at destroying her honor, and she is challenged to make tough decisions at the expense of her own happiness. But God reveals His love and faithfulness through the tender support of Catherine’s servants, employer, and Carter. Catherine’s decisions aren’t always the right ones, but she never makes them for self gain. Because of her teachable spirit, the Lord is able to touch many lives. Tracie Peterson is the author of more than 70 contemporary and historical novels. In this novel she clearly portrayed a heroine who has gained fortitude and endurance through suffering and hardship, something common to all of us. But although she was humble, she wasn’t a doormat, and I appreciated her spunk. I warmed to her servants’ kindness and wisdom and their wonderful role as loving parents. Carter’s compassion and determination to help and protect her touched me, even though he strong-armed her at times. Because their strengths were balanced with weaknesses, the characters were very believable. And the plot twists had me cringing and turning pages quickly. If her next book in this series is as enjoyable as the last two, it will be a great read.
