Geri McCarthy, author of The Adventures of Sandal-Man and Chocolate-Guy, plunges readers into a classic good versus evil conflict. Thirty Mekani monsters materialize from game cards and begin a wave of destruction across the United States. Children know the strengths and weaknesses of the Mekani because they often play the game. As experts, and fearing the worst, they call upon Sandal-Man and Chocolate-Guy for help. With technological and scientific skills, the two heroes are successful, but distrusted by the FBI who also seek to eliminate the evil-doers. The numerous battles, quick action and cartoon-like characters maintain the interest of fourth to sixth grade readers. There is no profanity nor sexual allusions. "Put-downs" are limited to the good guys calling the monsters "wimps." Value of caring for others emerges as kids worry about the monsters capturing family members. Not specifically "Christian," the book supports and is compatible with many Christian ideals. Omitted details promote fast action without distracting child readers. Readers do not know how authorities learn of the monsters’ destinations. Time is irrelevant. Whether a battle lasts an hour or a day doesn’t matter. Sandal-Man changes from being invisible to being visible – one minute he isn’t and the next he is. The reader must assume the changeover. The large number of monsters and their chameleon characteristics delight youngsters who are familiar with CD, internet, and game board monsters. With kid-style illustrations and whimsical monster names, The Adventures of Sandal-Man and Chocolate-Guy definitely attracts and satisfies young readers interested in monstrous battles, winning actions, and dazzling weapons.
