Beyond the Smoke
by Terry Burns
Review by Teresa Konopka

Beyond the Smoke by Terry W. Burns is a fabulous western novel about a lone cowboy. The story is very unique and the manner in which Burns writes makes every sentence flow to keep the attention of the reader.

Bryan is the main character and returns from a hunt one day to find his whole family dead. At the ripe age of seventeen, he must go out on his own and live his life. With some horses and supplies he manages to gather from his late family’s wagon, he goes on his melancholy way. Afterwards, a series of adventures and tumultuous scenarios ensue. These include being owned--to some degree--by a woman-beating, zaftig fugitive. Bryan is with the man called Fat Jack and his servant girl that is a Native American. He wants to flee but doesn’t want to leave the girl alone. On another account, a Native American boy follows Bryan in a hostile manner. However, Bryan spares his life. Later, Bryan meets up with a merchant and an orphaned girl. He finds refuge with the two and is later separated from his “second family” when local jurisdiction gets in the way.

This review won’t give away all of the action, but it is definitely shocking, unpredictable, and satisfying. The way in which Bryan handles himself and treats others is extraordinary. Faced with death, he makes some honorable decisions as a Christian. Although the book focuses on the western genre, there are underlying Christian values. The Bible is mentioned, and several characters talk about what led them to Christ; some even lead others to the Lord. This book is great for all ages. It is engaging, without any sour parts. The danger in the book includes little violence towards others except in the case of self-defense.
