Saul Reed is determined to set up his practice in Baltimore so that he can help the city’s poor. He agrees to go out and mind his father’s store in Nebraska for a while, but he has no intention of sticking around, no matter what plans the charming Clara Fields might come up with up. It doesn’t take him long to realize she’s playing matchmaker. There’s just one thing he can’t figure out—why didn’t she put herself on the list of possible brides? The Bride Bargain is a fun, light novel that is a must-read for lovers of historicals, particularly prairie stories. I enjoyed getting to know the lively residents of Buttonwood, and fell in love with Clara and Saul. As heroines go, Clara is obstinate enough to provide conflict but also warm-hearted, hard-working, and generous. Paul has a heart of gold that perfectly complements his metaphorical shining armor, and that makes it easy to forgive his stubborn determination to return to Baltimore and leave the town the readers are going to fall in love with. There is also a lively cast of supporting characters that help keep those pages flipping rapidly—I can’t wait to read the next books in the Prairie Promises series to get more of their stories. I definitely recommend The Bride Bargain to anyone in need of a diverting trip back in time. You won’t want to put it down, and when you do after the last page, you’ll be supremely satisfied.
