Chain of Terror

A short Story by Patcicia McGerr

Reviewed by Janet Blaylock

Chain of Terror by Patricia McGerr was an interesting short story.  Once I started reading it, I didn’t want to stop.

The main characters in the story were Selena, who was a government agent, Senator Stein and his wife Rachel, Abdul and Rahim, the captors.

Selena, the senator, and Rachel were captured by some Palestinians and taken to their campgrounds near the desert.  On the way there, Selena kept glancing at the gas meter because the dial showed they were almost out of gas.  Selena hoped that they would run out of gas in a place where they could escape.  However, that didn’t happen.

When they arrived, they saw Arab tents.  Senator Stein stayed in the small tent by himself while the women, Selena and Rachel, stayed in the car.  While they were in the car, they listened to the radio to see if the United States heard about their capture.

The Palestinians wanted to make a deal with the United States government.   The United States authorities captured five Palestinians because they were murderers. The Palestinians wanted their people released in exchange for their hostages.  The United States authorities wanted to know if their people were all right.

Senator Stein refused to make a deal with the Palestinians.  As a result, Selena talked to the Palestinians and convinced them that she would be willing to make a deal. What kind of deal was Selena going to make with the enemies?  Would the United States authorities agree to the deal?  Were they going to escape somehow?  If the deal wasn’t made, then the Palestinians were going to kill the hostages.  Was there any hope for them?  Now, you’ll have to read this short story to find out what happened.

This is an excellent story.  If you enjoy reading mysteries, you will enjoy this story. The characters quoted Bible verses to help them through their trials.  The author also mentioned how people go to God during their times of trials.  Throughout the story, Rachel and Selena turned to God for strength.

This story, Chain of Terror by Patricia McGerr, was in the anthology titled Women of Mystery Book I edited by Cynthia Manson.  You will find this story intriguing as well as the other stories in this anthology.   The protagonists in these stories are women.  Anyone will enjoy reading about these female protagonists and see how they work through their circumstances.
