THE CHURCH THAT MULTIPLIES: Growing a Healthy Cell Church in North America
by Joel Comiskey
Review by David Mundt

Why has the cell church strategy flourished in other countries but floundered in North America? Cell churches around the world are exploding in growth but not in North America. Joel Comiskey takes a close look at the North American culture and then attempts to provide a model that will work in this context. And to be clear, the cell church strategy is not the same as small group ministry. Cells differ from groups in their intentional emphasis on evangelism, leadership development, and multiplication.

The first section of the book takes a close look at the state of the Church in North America. Specifically, Comiskey considers six obstacles that the Church bumps up against and how the cell-church strategy would address those obstacles. The second section of the book identifies the components that are essential if cell-church strategy is going to be effective: prayer, community, evangelism, disciple-making, leadership training, coaching, and church planting. Each of these items, and their place in the strategy, is adequately described. The third and final section provides a list of cell churches in North America. Each of the churches on the list is implementing the cell church strategy effectively. These churches differ in size, geographic location, and denomination.

I found the book to be well-written and insightful. Very helpful analysis of the North American Church. Not as thorough as Robinson and Donahue, but certainly as helpful as McBride or Stockstill.

This was an excellent book. If you are a small groups pastor this book is a must-read, simply because it will stretch your thinking about your own ministry. If you are a senior pastor, I would strongly encourage you to read this book, especially if you are considering the launching of a small group ministry.
