Fancy Pants
by Cathy Marie Hake
Review by Mary Proctor

Engaged to Rexall Hume, an American businessman, Lady Sydney Hathway comes to New York to meet him. But when she learns that he only wants to marry her to beget a legitimate heir and gain business contacts with the British peerage, she disguises herself as a boy and flees. Now her only refuge is Fuller Johnson, an uncle living in Texas, whom she has never met. Uncle Fuller has no use for women and mistakenly assumes Sydney’s a male. Fearing he might not accept her if he knew the truth, she vows to hide her true identity until her next birthday—several months away—when she will receive an inheritance that will give her financial independence.

When she arrives at the Forsaken Ranch, Uncle Fuller is out of town. “Big Tim” Creighton, his partner and foreman, is disgusted when he sees prissy “Fancy Pants” Hathway, and decides that he must toughen “him” up and make a man out of him before Fuller returns. Tim mercilessly bullies Sydney, and she, determined to prove herself to the big, rude brute, keeps her wits about her while she bears under his abuse. Gradually an honorable nature shines through his tough demeanor and wins Sydney’s admiration. And her grit and perseverance earn his respect and appreciation. Then Tim discovers her deception, and feeling betrayed by a lying, scheming female, he severs their friendship. Convinced that Tim will never forgive her, a regretful and broken-hearted Sydney leaves the safety of the ranch, unaware that a desperate Hume is hot on her trail and determined to force her to marry him.

FANCY PANTS captures the flavor of life in the 1890s in the American west contrasted by the rigid social standards followed by English women of the peerage. Although she feels forced to hide her true identity, our heroine conforms to these standards in her heart. She constantly reveals her upbringing and values by her thoughts, conversation and actions, but like so many other “forms” of behavior, they are based on rules of etiquette and appearances only. Her attitude toward God follows another but similar set of manmade religious traditions. Then she’s exposed to believers who know the truth, and she must choose between her ingrained conformity and simple faith in the promises of the Gospel.

Cathy Marie Hake is the author of more than 20 historical novels. Her wit and humor sparkled throughout FANCY PANTS and gave me more than a few occasions to chuckle, smile and snort with laughter. I especially loved the tugs of war between caring but hard-headed Tim and struggling but determined Sydney. Lovable supporting characters added to the fun. A very delightful read indeed.
