Elizabeth Westbrook is determined to prove to the world—and her Senator father—that a woman can be an outstanding photographer and journalist. She has the perfect opportunity, too: a trip to the Colorado Rockies. All she has to do is send her work back to her employer at the Chronicle, and she may win a new position. One where she can use her own name. Now all she needs is a guide through the wilds. . . and to keep control of the lung condition that had killed her mother when she was Elizabeth’s age. Daniel Ranslett has too much past. It’s more than the haunting memories of war. It’s the weight of other deaths, more innocent souls, that burdens him. He’s retreated to the mountains in an attempt to find solace. And he doesn’t appreciate the smart-mouthed Yankee woman who thrusts herself into his life and demands he take her “hunting” for photographs. Yes, she’s beautiful and stirs something inside him—but he’d just as soon not have himself stirred up. He doesn’t deserve it. But when Elizabeth finds trouble—and a dead body—he knows avoiding her isn’t going to be an issue. From a Distance is another fantastic historical romance by award-winning author Tamera Alexander, the first in the Timer Ridge Reflections series starting in 1875 Colorado. Elizabeth is a woman struggling against the confines society placed on women, and Daniel is a man of depth and honor that makes for a great hero. I enjoyed their interactions, as well as the playful banter of Elizabeth and Josiah, the former slave she hired to assist her. The book mixes romance with adventure and a hint of mystery, but once again it’s the characterization that grabbed me from the start. What I found most interesting was that Elizabeth was the one who professed to be a Christian, yet it was Daniel who seemed to embody Christian ideals, even though at the start of the book he’s at odds with God. His return to faith is understated and never fully addressed, which is my one complaint, but his example nevertheless plays a role in helping Elizabeth turn her faith from words to total trust. From a Distance is not to be missed! Pick this book up, and you’re bound to learn, laugh, and fall in love with the unlikely pair blazing their way to a new future.
