Hannah Grace, the eldest of Jacob Kane’s daughters, is determined to be reasonable. It’s time she settle down, so she accepts the suit of the doctor of her Michigan town. Maybe he’s more interested in himself than her. And maybe he could stand to be more proactive in his faith. But he’s a good man. Of course, when the new sheriff arrives with a small boy in tow, her offer to help the displaced youngster regain his ability to speak and learn to trust again doesn’t settle well with the doctor. And her growing attraction for the sheriff doesn’t settle well with her. Gabriel Devlin isn’t sure what he did to deserve to be saddled with some mute runaway—and then promptly accused of abuse by the feisty redhead running the store he stops in to buy the kid some clothes—but he’s determined to do his job. And God obviously has something in mind here . . . not that he expected to start falling for the scamp. The boy, named Jesse, is obviously running from something. And when that something comes looking for him, Gabe has a new challenge: keeping his town—and the woman he can’t help but love—safe. But will he ever be able to convince the stubborn Hanna Grace Kane to forget that stuffy doctor and give him and Jesse a chance—before it’s too late? Hannah Grace is a sweet, suspenseful story that masterfully balances those two aspects. I gobbled this book up from cover to cover, putting it down only when I had to. I was swept immediately into the small-town world in turn-of-the-century Michigan, falling in love with Hannah and Gabe and little Jesse from page one. The story is gripping, the characters lovable, and the pace quick, combining into a novel that’s sticking with me a week after I put it down. I’m a big fan of Sharlene MacLaren, and in usual form, her latest book has won my heart. I can’t wait to see what she has in store for Hannah’s two sisters in the other books in this series!
