In the Shadow of the Sun King
By Golden Keyes Parsons
Review by Roseanna White

Madeleine Clavell’s Huguenot family has always been protected by King Louis XIV—as much because of their history with him as the edict proclaiming religious safety. But without warning, soldiers descend on their comfortable world, threatening to steal her children away to be educated in Catholic schools and destroy all she holds dear. Desperate, Madeleine dons the courtier attire she hasn’t worn in a decade and prepares to meet her first love—the king of France.

In the Shadow of the Sun King takes readers back in time to tumultuous 17th-century France, when to be Protestant amounted to persecution and possible death. Following Madeleine, her husband François, and their three children through the fiercest struggle of their lives, we get a wonderful peek into the lives of faith and flight faced by these heroes of the past.

Golden Keyes Parsons weaves a tale with intricate, rich threads, the end a tapestry of life complete with passion, rage, redemption, and deep-in-the-soul faith that spurs her characters ever onward. Turning these pages means being sucked into their world, and I found beauty in every step of their struggle as their faith was made real. One can see the hand of God in the path the Huguenots took, and it serves as a reminder to me that He indeed ordains our every step, as Madeleine continually prayed He would.

This story has a wonderful truth to it, too—it’s based on the author’s own family history, which adds a depth to the reading that will make it all the more gripping. Obviously embellished and filled in, it also retains that dramatic quality one expects in a novel of adventure and court intrigue.

Lovers of history, romance, and the fight for faith will not want to miss this stunning debut by Golden Keyes Parsons. I’m eagerly awaiting the next installment of the Darkness to Light series!
