The Island of Marna
by Jamey Heit
Review by V. Colclasure

The title, The Island of Marna, invokes images of C. S. Lewis’ land of Narnia and J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth. So does the setting. As the story unfolds, Sais, a young heroine, rides flying eagles and works with distrustful allies. She must overcome obstacles of nature and the dark forces of Molech, an evil leader filled with desire for power. Sais also struggles to understand why she never knew she was a princess. As she discovers and uses details of the past that affect the current battle with Molech, she learns how to be the leader Marna needs. Molech, a namesake of the biblical god of the Ammonites, thrives on adulation and dissension. Having already absorbed the hidden knowledge of Marna’s ancient people, he once ingested three of its magical ruft berry seeds such that his body continuously disseminates a cold, destructive spirit. His desire is to possess Marna, the land and source of ruft berries.

Sais’ almost impossible task of defending against Molech attracts and holds readers’ attention because it elicits both their loyalty and their hope for her success. The Island of Marna returns readers to an era when right and wrong are easily defined, but it also keeps them in this modern age through intriguing characters who deal with internal conflicts and personal relationships. Some succeed, some fail. Although Christianity is never mentioned, its underlying values emerge as Sais overcomes evil, restores broken relationships, accepts her gifts of leadership, and learns to persevere.

In an age when readers are short of time, author Jamey Heit provides a quick, credible read for enthusiasts of King Arthur style romance, mystery, and adventure. He exhibits talent and skill in the craft of story telling which primarily appeals to young adults. Heit provides readers of the genre with what they expect - an exciting time in a distant land, adventure, conflict, and a satisfying conclusion. Readers will be on the lookout for more of his books.
