Dan has long thought that Annie was too good for Tony, especially when his little brother starts hanging out with the wrong crowd and pressuring her for sex. The attack hammers home what Dan long suspected—Tony can’t handle a serious relationship right now. Instead of standing by his girl, he focuses solely on himself. Which, in Dan’s mind, leaves the field wide open. He doesn’t want to hurt his brother, but he’s loved Annie for so long. How can it be wrong to tell her that? It’s Not About Me is a frank, honest look into the life of a teenage girl and the trials she faces concerning sex, friendship, faith, and identity. I knew going in that this book was labeled “edgy,” and it only took me a few pages to figure out why. Michelle Sutton doesn’t hold back when she’d describing the events in Annie’s life, and I appreciated the realistic approach. Throughout the story faith plays a key role, and I loved how Dan is first concerned with Annie’s salvation. The two struggle through a difficult, intense situation with strength of character, aplomb, and hearts full of love. My one complaint is that I would have liked to see more—more of the internal struggles, more of the budding romance, more, more, more! The author did a fabulous job bringing me into the story and keeping me turning those pages. It’s Not About Me is a must-read for young adults
dealing with the big questions in life. Through a story of love and decisions,
Sutton reveals one of the greatest truths we need to learn: that in order to
live a full life, we need to look beyond ourselves. Kudos to Michelle on this
debut novel! I’m looking forward to the sequels.
