Casey O'Hare longs for a new start in life. For years she has stayed with the Davis Jenkins’ outlaw gang, because her brother Tim was there. Tired of serving as cook, holding horses during robberies, and fighting off Davis Jenkins, Casey makes a frantic get-away during a storm. Her plans soon go awry when she wakes up to discover she's been captured by a man wanting to use her as bait to apprehend Jenkins. Though she desires to escape Morgan Andrews, Casey can't deny her attraction to the mysterious man. When the Jenkins gang shows up, Morgan and Casey are in a fight for their lives. They escape, but Morgan is severely wounded. Casey risks her own life to save his and takes him to a nearby doctor. Once he's stable, she leaves, hoping to find a place where Jenkins won't find her, but she can't get Morgan out of her mind. She ends up in Kahlerville, Texas, where a kind pastor hires her to nurse his ailing wife. There, Casey learns about Jesus—and learns that it is truly possible to start over. If only Jenkins doesn't find her. Morgan hasn't been able to get Casey out of his mind and has searched for her for months. He's stunned to find her when he returns home. Morgan wants to court Casey, but doesn't know if they can overcome their pasts. Jenkins is responsible for Morgan's greatest pain, but he is working daily to give his hate for Jenkins and his desire for revenge to God. As a lawyer, he has the skills to prove Casey is innocent of the charges listed on the wanted posters. As they work together to gather information for her case, their love for each other grows, but is it strong enough to withstand Morgan's temper or Casey's fears? And what happens when Jenkins finds out where they are? The Old West comes alive in DiAnn Mills’ newest novel, LEATHER AND LACE, the first book in the Texas Legacy series. Readers are sure to sympathize with Casey O'Hare, who leaves her abusive home with her brother and ends up in an outlaw gang. This story starts off on a run and doesn't slow. Morgan's character is fascinating. He's the tough, hurting hero that readers love. Casey is strong and determined to put her past behind and become a respectable woman. The secondary characters add depth and dimension to the story and seem every bit as real as the main characters. What I really liked about this book is that even though the characters give their hearts to God, they are still normal people who struggle with attitudes and fears. Morgan must put aside his hatred for Jenkins and what he did. Casey worries about putting those she's grown to care about in danger and constantly wonders if it's time to move on. From Utah to Arizona to West Texas, Ms. Mills does an excellent job setting the scene and making readers feel as if they are actually there. The tension in LEATHER AND LACE rarely lessens as Casey is constantly looking over her shoulder. Just when you think she is safe, Jenkins appears again. Whether you love a good historical, romance or a story set in the Old West, LEATHER AND LACE is an emotional, heart-tugging novel not to be missed. (320 pp., $9.97)
