Bonnie Kahler wakes up one day and realizes what a mess she’s made of her life after her husband died. She’s neglected her children and her ranch, leaned too heavily on her family and wine. Her oldest son has turned into a rebellious bully, and her younger son and daughter barely know her. And worst of all, Lester Hillman, the man who’d been supplying her with wine, seems to think that now he should be able to control her life. Bonnie keeps quiet about it out of his respect for his wife, but how is she supposed to dig herself out of this one? She turns back to her faith, yes—and it seems like maybe the answer to her prayers takes the form of the wild-looking preacher who’s just come to town so her stepfather can retire, Travis Whitworth. Travis is running from past mistakes, glad he has a chance to start over but not quite sure if he’s deserving of it—that’s why he hides himself under too much hair, baggy clothes, and glasses he doesn’t need. And Kahlerville doesn’t exactly give him a warm welcome. Still, he goes where the Spirit leads, stepping in to try to help the beautiful Bonnie Kahler get control of her wayward son, Zach. Travis takes the boy into his home and determines to teach him some respect—but Travis soon learns that there’s far more evil going on in Kahlerville than one boy’s misbehaving. There’s a dark storm brewing, and the eye of it seems to be Lester Hillman, who acts like he owns the town and everything in it, especially the reformed prostitutes living at Heaven’s Gate. Lightning and Lace is the final installment of DiAnn Mills’ Texas Legacy, and it’s a stunning story in its own right. There’s so much about this book that I loved. The characters were deep and realistic, yet with a humility about them that’s rare enough to be inspiring. The setting was alive, and the plot was well twisted. I had a hard time putting this one down. I haven’t had the pleasure of reading the first books in Mills’ series—an oversight I intend to remedy soon—but Lightning and Lace easily stands on its own. I was never left floundering with questions of what had gone on before. Any DiAnn Mills fans will definitely want to pick up this book, and any lovers of historical romance who haven’t read her yet will want to check her out. Mills manages to at once capture the innocence of hope and the threat of evil and deception, and she weaves a tale made rock solid with knowable, lovable characters. Lightning and Lace is an amazing read, and it’ll strike your heart and hold you captive. Publisher: Barbour Books
