The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe
by C. S. Lewis
Reviewed by Janet Blaylock
Price $19.99

The main characters in this book were Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy. They were brothers and sisters. They lived with an elderly Professor. He had a very large house with several rooms. There was a room that was empty except for a wardrobe, which was very mysterious.

One day, the children were exploring the house. Lucy entered the wardrobe and couldn’t believe the rows of coats she saw. As she pushed them aside, she found light in the back of the wardrobe. She continued her search and found a land that was very cold and had snow on the ground. She continued onward and met a Faun named Tumnus. They visited for awhile. Tumnus told Lucy that they were in the Land of Narnia. He also told her about the evil witch who pretends to be good. After that, Lucy found her way back to the wardrobe and entered the empty room. When she found her brothers and sister, she told them about her experience, but they didn’t believe her. That upset her because she knew she was telling the truth.

Another day, they played hide and seek. Lucy went back to the wardrobe and entered. A few minutes later, Edmund came in, but he couldn’t find her. He found himself in Narnia. He realized that Lucy had told the truth. Edmund met the evil witch who pretended to be good. He really thought she was good. Later on, he met Lucy, and Lucy was happy that Edmund found Narnia and believed her.

They went back to the wardrobe and into the empty room. Then, Lucy told Peter and Susan what happened, but Edmund wouldn’t back her up. He said they were just playing a game. That made Lucy upset.

Peter and Susan decided to talk to the Professor about their problem. They thought something mentally was wrong with Lucy. During their conversation, they talked about reality and fantasy. They told the Professor that if something was real, it would be real all the time. For example, one time the wardrobe seemed to lead to the land of Narnia like Lucy claimed, but when they went to the wardrobe to look, they saw only the back of the wardrobe. It didn’t lead anywhere. The Professor disagreed with them. He didn’t believe that something real would appear real all the time. He also brought out to them that if Lucy told the truth all the time, why wouldn’t she tell the truth now? If Edmund was in the habit of telling lies, why would they believe him now? They began to understand what he was saying and realized that Lucy had told the truth.

Later on, all four of them ended up in Narnia and believed what Lucy had said. They also caught Edmund in a lie when he mentioned about going in the direction that led to the lamp posts. Edmund realized that he had given himself away, and the other children realized that he had been there with Lucy.

During this adventure, they met a beaver who tried to help them. He took them to his dam that he had built. The beaver also told them about Aslan. The children hadn’t heard about him before. He was a lion and was going to save Narnia from the witch.

Now, you’ll have to read the book to find out what happens. Will the four children meet up with the evil witch? The witch wanted Edmund to bring the other children to her. Will he do that? Will the good Queen help them? What will happen to the children?

I enjoyed this book and the way that it was written. It’s easy to read and understand. This book is also the first book in the series titled The Chronicles of Narnia.
