Callie May has sworn off men—it seems the wisest choice after her disastrous marriage to an abusive, cheating husband. She has her baby daughter to consider, and the last thing she needs is more trouble. Unfortunately, trouble seems to be what moves in next door. Dan Mattson, though handsome beyond compare, is draped in mystery and far too often in her way. She can’t deny a certain attraction; but that doesn’t mean she wants anything to do with the brooding construction worker. Dan was running away, and on a good day he could admit it. Ever since the death of his wife and baby girl, life had lost all meaning. So he gave up his pastorate and moved to Illinois to take a job from an old friend. He didn’t count on moving next door to a cute little blonde who makes all sorts of protective instincts flare up—nor did he count on how fast his past bad habits took hold of him when he wasn’t communing with the Lord. Everyone keeps telling him not to blame God. But how is he supposed to stop? And when Callie’s ex comes back into the picture, will havoc or hope prevail? Long Journey Home is a touching story of trust, faith, and second chances. Callie, though understandably wary, always remained a character you’d want to call your friend. Her journey into a deeper faith provides a fantastic impetus to the story, serving as hope to offset all the hurt she’s endured. Dan, though too hurting to open up to the Lord easily, nevertheless exhibits a strength of character that makes him admirable, especially concerning Callie and her daughter. I’ve read all of Sharlene MacLaren’s books to date, so I was looking forward to getting this newest addition, and I wasn’t disappointed. The story is at once deep and sweet, the characters loveable, and the pace kept the pages turning. Though dealing with important and serious issues of divorce, abuse, and the loss of a spouse and child, the author handles it with gentleness and focuses always on the light of the Lord. Anyone looking for a great contemporary with which to wile away a day will really enjoy Long Journey Home. You’ll put it down with a soft glow in your heart and reminder that no matter how dark the night, the Lord is preparing a glorious morning for you. Publisher: Whitaker House |
