Rebecca Stoltzfus, injured as a young child, was paralyzed and in a wheel chair most of the time. As she grew older she became more and more troubled, not so much by her condition as by the fact that she didn’t want to be a burden on anyone and also didn’t want to be felt sorry for. Although she was beginning to feel sorry for herself quite a bit. Rebecca had been fairly content growing up in her Amish Community with her friends and family about her. But as time goes by, things began to change in her life. Her grandmother, who had lived with Rebecca and her family since the accident that rendered her legs useless, suddenly died. Rebecca felt the loss terribly and was having a very difficult time dealing with her grief. She turns to her grandmother’s Bible for strength and to tending the plants that they both loved so much. But the more Rebecca tries to think positively, the more discouraged she becomes. Her cousin and best friend begins courting and gets married, which makes Rebecca more aware of her own situation and her longing to be courted herself. As Rebecca prays for a miracle, she seems to block out the very answer she seeks. Her family tries to help Rebecca through this difficult time, and they even build a greenhouse so she can start a business of her own to try to become independent. Is the help she receives from Daniel Beachy just an interest in her business or an interest in her? Rebecca is so consumed by her handicap that she nearly throws away the very thing she wants so desperately. The miracle she has prayed for is right before her eyes. Will she open them in time to see? I found this book as I did the first of this series: endearing and touching. I appreciate the insight into the Amish Community that Wanda brings her readers and the "realness" she gives her characters. I look forward to the next one!
