IT’S NOT ABOUT ME

By Max Lucado
Review by Laura V. Hilton

Look out for number one. I earned my success. I shouldn’t have to deal with this pain.

Since day one we’ve been demanding our own way. Max Lucado takes this popular notion that we are the most important person and the world revolves around us, and shows us what it really is—a big lie. Through true stories, Scripture, and other scenarios, he teaches us that we were created to worship God, and that everything we do, say, and think, should focus around one thing. Worship of God.

The book is divided up into short, easy-to-read chapters which are sure to hold your tee’ns attention. At the end of the book, there is a section with questions and plenty of space available for recording your answers.

The Leader’s Guide is full of cute plays, more verses, and tons of discussion questions which are guaranteed to pull even the shyest teen out of their shell and get them talking. Plus, the book has reproducible pages so you can distribute copies to your entire youth group with ease. Perfect for both large and small groups.

I used IT’S NOT ABOUT ME with my homeschooled teens while I reviewed it, so I could get a feel for how it would work. It held the boys’ attention, and I feel they both learned something from the experience. Their comments varied. My fifteen-year-old thought there were too many verses to look up (this would be solved if a larger youth group used it and they took turns) and my thirteen-year-old thought it was too long and boring. My fifteen-year-old did not share that opinion. So whether your teens enjoy the book or not will depend largely on their personalities.

All in all, I give IT’S NOT ABOUT ME a thumbs up. $10.99 (Teen Edition),  $14.99 (Leader’s Guide). 166 pages (Teen Edition), 122 pages (Leader’s Guide).
