Rebecca Seabrooke loves her job as curator of Hollinworth Hall, one of England’s finest ancestral homes. Maybe in part it’s because her family’s been here for generations, just as the Hollinworths have—as their servants. It makes it a little awkward, in her opinion, when the attractive owner, Quentin Hollinworth, begins to pay attention to her in a way not strictly job-related, but she enjoys his company. And when distant American cousins come into the picture with new information about the family’s history, it gets a whole lot more interesting. What is the “curse” that one of Quentin’s ancestors talks about in her letters? The story also takes the reader back in time to the Victorian era and the writer of those letters, Berry Hamilton. She has made it her life’s work to run a hospital-school for children with mental illness, inspired by the plight of her own family. As the obstacles mount, she continually comes head-to-head with Irish politician Simon MacFarland, whose sister is staying at the school. But is Simon the answer to her troubles, or just one more obstacle to be overcome? On Sparrow Hill is a wonderful combination of contemporary and historical romance, offering two equally intriguing plotlines that will capture your imagination from the get-go. It took me a while to adjust to the dual stories, but then I couldn’t wait to jump from one to the other, I was so curious as to where each was going. Both stories deal with the difficulty of mental handicaps, specifically the one that is now known as Fragile X syndrome. But that is far from the only difficulties encountered by our two parallel heroines. Maureen Lang has done it again—created a story that will burrow its way into your heart. Romance lovers won’t want to miss this combination novel that shows so clearly how little we’ve changed over the centuries.
