Paper Roses
By Amanda Cabot
Review by Roseanna White

Life has been cruel to Sarah Dobbs. The fall from the horse when she was a child left her with a permanent limp, and then her parents’ deaths left her with a stigma she has to flee Philadelphia to escape. Bringing her toddling little sister with her, Sarah sets off for Texas and the man she’d fallen in love with through a series of letters. Those paper roses told her that Austin Canfield will be a husband who will love her in spite of her failures, who will welcome little Thea as his daughter. There’s only one problem: Austin Canfield is dead.

Clay dreads meeting Sarah and telling her that his brother was recently killed. Filled with rage over the murder, he has enough to worry about with the ranch he despises and the rash of crimes sweeping Ladreville. He doesn’t need to add to it concern for the spunky woman and her sister—what he needs is for them to turn around and head back east.

But Sarah’s determined to make Ladreville her new home, challenging the rivalry between its German and French inhabitants, which they brought with them from Alcase. She’s determined to help Clay find Austin’s killer. And most of all, she’s determined to guard her heart against any more hurt. She’d been willing to open it up to the man who penned those paper roses . . . but now that he’s gone, who’s left for her to trust?

Paper Roses isn’t just another story about a mail-order bride. Saddled with emotional trauma that far outweighs any physical baggage she could have brought with her from Philadelphia, Sarah is an aching but strong heroine who will make you smile even as you shake your head at her obstinacy. Clay, bitter and bent on revenge, starts as one of those characters whom you like, though you’re not quite sure why. His dynamics through the story soon help you see the good heart under his gruff exterior, and by the end you’ll be standing up and cheering them both on.

Lovers of westerns and historical romance will adore Paper Roses. Cabot crafts a tale of God’s sovereign grace with emotion and skill. I carried this book with me into every room of the house until I was finished, unwilling to leave it until I’d flipped that last page and let out a happy sigh. I can’t wait to get my hands on the second two books in the Texas Dreams Trilogy.
