The Proof continues the story of John Wells, the astronaut, husband and man of God from The Evidence (Released March 2006). The first manned mission to Mars is about to get underway. John is joined by his old friend Michelle and new companion Sean on this historic trip. Their ship, unlike others these astronauts have flown, is one of luxury but this very comfort causes hardships among crew members that comes to a head on Mars. All the while the utterly self assured Rex Edwards, the ship’s designer and builder watches their every move with great interest. Back on earth Edwards is wholly convinced of the success of the mission, however it is his relationship with Malcolm Raines, the self anointed prophet, that garners most of the reader’s attention. Raines’s prophesies continue to come true and he continues to gain followers and as he acquires influence his agenda becomes more and more clear. His blasphemous remarks and behavior are opposed by many, the most unlikely of which is Amy Wells. Amy is (in this reader’s opinion) the true hero of this book. She has grown beyond the doubting, insecure wife. She has found confidence in herself and in her God: confidence enough to inspire other women around the world and stand toe to toe with the "alien’s ambassador." Her fate, though forever intertwined with John’s, takes a strange and unexpected turn providing answers to one mystery while spawning even more. Aside from a secret John and the crew will keep forever, their experiences on Mars come and go somewhat uneventfully. They made contact with the machines there and learned they are not quite what everyone thinks them to be, and found what might be evidence of life. A freak accident on the return trip, however, puts their discoveries on the back burner as John finds himself utterly alone without a way to call home. John’s eventual safe return makes him a hero, but his place in this riddle is far from over. The Proof steps out of the world of most science fiction. Most of the action is completely plausible. In fact, it is the terrestrial aspects of this book that make it most compelling. Much like The Evidence, The Proof presents its readers with a mix of mystery, technology, and faith that make it feverishly compelling. After reading The Proof there is no question that the third installment of the Mars Hill trilogy will transfix its readers as it wraps up the puzzles presented thus far.
