Desi didn’t meant to go looking for trouble—not this time, anyway—she just has a knack for finding it, much to the dismay of her FBI agent boyfriend, Tony Lucano. But what was she supposed to do? Her best friend Max’s family needs her help. Max’s niece has gone missing right after native artifacts were stolen from a New Mexico museum, leaving her husband and baby behind. Was she responsible for the thefts? A little probing might be in order to find out. Tony is none too thrilled about the woman he loves trekking across the country into a crime scene, especially when she draws the attention of Hamilton Gordon, a scum-of-the-earth type that Tony’s determined to bring down. And it only gets worse when her little search seems to tie in with his ongoing investigation. Desiree Jacobs definitely has a knack for driving him crazy! He’d like nothing better than to keep her out of danger. . . if only she’d cooperate with that plan. We also get to see lots of personal growth in the characters as these two battle their personal problems along with their circumstances. Tony has a real problem opening up, and Desi has a real problem with the thought of his successful career taking him away from Boston. Reluctant Runaway is book two in the To Catch a Thief series, and it’s a read you won’t want to miss. From Indian artifacts to pirated DVDs to a motorcycle gang to a cult that falls one crucial shade away from the truth of Christianity, Desi and Tony stumble into a world far removed from their home turf of Boston. Nelson crafts a tale that’s witty, clever, and as intricate as the criminal organization they’re out to bring down. Though this is a sequel, it stands on its own; since the story and setting are so very different from the first book, new readers will have no problem following along, though the hints of Desi and Tony’s first adventure will probably whet your appetite for it, as well. I really enjoyed the first book, but this one was even better. The action was non-stop, the mystery was perfectly executed, and I loved how Nelson handled the mock-Christianity by battling it with the true kind. Reluctant Runaway is a perfect way to pass a few hours. If you enjoy art, romance, crime novels, the Southwest, or just stories of the Truth triumphing over clever deception, this is a story for you.
