Two days, some borrowed cash, and several lies to good people later, Maggie finds herself in a little town in Kansas, half a country between her and the nightmare that had been her life. She ends up at an inn called Wren’s Nest, owned by the most generous woman she’s ever met. Out here, the stars shine brighter than she knew they could and the people are nicer than they probably should be to a girl with a past she’s running from, who won’t even tell them her real name. But when they realize she’s got no place to go, they take her in like one of their own. Even Trevor Ashlock, the printer/carpenter who’s still mourning the deaths of his wife and son, offers his friendship. Trevor knows well that the woman calling herself Meg Anders has something to hide—but as he realizes all the hurt she’s been through, he also knows she’s got good reason. And nothing, it seems, can stop his heart from opening up again. Remember to Forget is the first of three novels to take place in Clayburn, Kansas, and I for one am already chomping at the bit for the next installment. Through a series of serendipitous events, coincidences, and kindnesses from strangers, the reader gets to go on an exhausting adventure with Maggie that makes Clayburn feel like home for us all when she arrives there. With the juxtaposition of Kevin’s cruelty and the open-hearted goodness of her new friends, Raney captures both the best and worst of humanity, and Maggie’s reactions to the extremes is what shapes her into a character that grabbed hold of my heart and still hasn’t let go. My only complaint by the time I finished the book was that I had finished the book—I wanted more! More about the others in the tiny town, more about their history, more about their future—how fortuitous that there are two books to go! Remember to Forget is everything you could ever want in a contemporary romance: it’s sweet, it’s realistic, it’s touching, it’s got a hint of suspense, and it captures perfectly the hearts of its characters. Maggie may have spent most of the novel trying to remember to forget her past, but her story isn’t one you’ll be forgetting anytime soon. Publisher: Howard Books |
