Annabelle Grayson McCutchens has been given a second chance. A chance to escape the town where everyone knows about her past, a chance to build a new life with her new husband on his ranch in Idaho. But days into their journey, Jonathan falls ill and dies, leaving Annabelle alone and wondering how she’s going to survive without the man who redeemed her, who bought her from the brothels. And wondering why she could never manage to love him like she should have. Matthew Taylor answers the ad for a guide having no idea it’s his half-brother’s widow, Annabelle, who needs the help to Idaho. But once he figured it out and realizes Johnny’s gone, he’s sorely tempted to hightail it out of town again—except that he needs the job, and to get as far away from Texas as he can—not even Fountain Creek, Colorado is far enough. He’s made no secret of the fact that he disapproved of his brother’s choice in a wife. And though Annabelle’s friends say she’s changed and he should give her a chance to prove it, Matthew knows well women like her never leave behind their pasts. He doesn’t trust her, he isn’t convinced she didn’t have something to do with his brother’s death—and he has no intention of letting her take what Johnny left her without giving him his part. Revealed is a driven and deep-hearted story that gets down to the core of its characters. The second novel in Alexander’s Fountain Creek Chronicles, it easily stands alone; I haven’t yet had the pleasure of reading the first book, Rekindled, but I had no trouble following along with this one—though now I’m eager to get my hands on its predecessor. I fell in love instantly with the insecure but determined Annabelle, whose sordid past seemed to shadow her no matter where she went. At one time she was a lady of the night, but now she seeks the light of the Lord and has to figure out how to love the woman He’s made her. Matthew provides a stark contrast—he tends toward the self-righteous when it comes to matters of personal purity, but the demons he’s fleeing from Texas prove that he, too, has his flaws that add depth and a hint of mystery that makes him appealing to the reader as well as the heroine. I love a little grit in my story, and this one gives it to me—the characters are real people dealing with wrenching struggles, the plotline took me from quiet riverbed to desert to brothel to paradise, and the insight was touching and ringing with truth. And through it all is one indisputable lesson: reveal your whole heart to the Lord, and He’ll make you who you need to be, regardless of who you once were. Read Revealed, and you’ll come away changed. I can’t wait to read the next installment.
