Sanctuary (Faith of Our Fathers Series #1)

Sanctuary
By Molly Noble Bull
Review by Roseanna White

Nowhere is safe for Rachel in 1740s France.  She is a Jew, and her family has long been scorned for it.  And now she is also associated with the Huguenots, a sect just as reviled.  She can hardly wait to marry Louis Dupre and move to Scotland with him, where they’ll finally have freedom from the persecution of the French church.  But right before they’re ready to sail, evil strikes.  Captain Jean Vallae kills not only her intended, but her parents as well.

Pierre Dupre barely has time to feel guilty for not somehow saving his little brother, Louis.  He is too busy trying to get his family to safety when the French authorities begin searching for him and Rachel.  He sends his mother and youngest brother on toward England and leads Rachel away from danger.  But the more he’s with her, the more his heart wishes she could love him as she loved his brother—a miracle he is sure will never happen.

Set in a time of danger and prejudice for any non-Catholics, Sanctuary is a historical romance that will stir your heart and paint you a vivid picture of days past.  As Pierre and Rachel travel from Benoit, France all the way to Luss, Scotland, they are hounded for their beliefs and for Rachel’s ancestry.  Rachel, though thought to be a Huguenot as the Dupres, has no attachment to Christianity at the start of the book, and in many ways their journey is also about her growing understanding of forgiveness—the gift of it the Lord would give her, and that which she must embrace in her own heart.

I enjoyed the story and loved the characters—Rachel and Pierre and Jean Vallae are all compelling and well developed.  Molly Noble Bull has excellently crafted this tale, and any lovers of romance or history will enjoy reading this latest book by the award winning author.  I especially enjoyed becoming more familiar with a piece of history I was largely ignorant of.  I’m looking forward to the next installments of the Faith of Our Fathers Series.
