Sarah Woodward came to Kentucky as mail order bride—for a man who’d fallen in love with another before she showed up. But Sarah’s convinced the Lord led her to Little Hickman for a reason, and she isn’t about to leave just because a husband wasn’t awaiting her. She has plenty of money, and she doesn’t mind the distance between her and the man back east determined to marry her. What she does mind is the way one Rocky Callahan is dealing with his niece and nephew, who rode in on the stage with her. Rocky Callahan already lost a wife and a son—the last thing he needs in another family. But his sister’s kids are foisted upon him, and he doesn’t have much choice but to take them in. When the new redhead in town seems bent on sticking her pert little nose into his business, he begins to wonder if it isn’t a good stroke of luck that his friend Ben opted not to marry her. The kids need a mother, and he could sure use a wife. Still, the last thing he expects is for Sarah Woodward to accept his awkward proposal of marriage. Sarah, My Beloved is the second book in MacLaren’s heartwarming Little Hickman Creek Series. I really enjoyed the first book, Loving Liza Jane, and the second installment was better still. Sarah was as feisty and determined as her red hair might indicate, and Rocky as hard and unbending as his name suggests. Put them together, and you get a story with a lot of push and shove and some interesting twists and turns. Best of all, their love story is not only believable but truly a pleasure to watch unfold. As I’ve come to expect from her, Sharlene MacLaren writes an engaging story with characters I’d like to call my friends. Through this tale of faith and the journey to triumphing over grief, she paints a beautiful picture of what home can be, when it’s made by people willing to open their hearts to each other and to the Lord. I can’t wait to see what’s waiting for me next in Little Hickman Creek.
