SISTERCHICKS DOWN UNDER

By Robin Jones Gunn

Review by Laura V. Hilton

Kathleen Salerno’s husband, Tony, has just landed his dream film job, so they pack up and leave everything familiar in California and head for New Zealand. At first, Kathleen doesn’t know how she will cope. She has gone from having many friends and a busy life to knowing nobody and living in a one-room doll house. With nothing to do all day, she does just that. Nothing--but sleep. Eventually, the need to do laundry kicks in, and while expending the energy to do that, Kathleen decides to walk down to a coffee shop and gets a cup.

There she meets Jill Radovich, a widow, “celebrating” the two year anniversary of her husband’s death by crying in the coffee shop. Jill invites Kathleen to join her, and as they talk they realize they have more in common than being two California girls in New Zealand. A friendship is formed. Will Kathleen help Jill discover how to truly live again when the person she loved most is gone?

I totally loved SISTERCHICKS DOWN UNDER. As a book reviewer I have to read a lot of books that I don’t really enjoy and sometimes it gets to be a chore instead of a pleasure. It was a total delight to pick up SISTERCHICKS DOWN UNDER and read it straight through because I wanted to.

Kathleen and Jill are two adorable women. Their children are grown; they are empty-nesters with financial freedom. It was fun getting to go on their adventures via the pages of this book. The description was great, there were many laugh-out-loud moments, and the only thing I didn’t like about SISTERCHICKS DOWN UNDER is that it ended.  Discussion questions are included at the back. $12.99. 237 pages.
