SOMEWHERE FAST
By Bob Beltz
Review by Laura V. Hilton

Pastor John Calvin hoped the highway would have the answers to the midlife crisis he’s having. So he hops on his Harley in Chicago and decides to travel the old Route 66, hoping that he’ll figure out the questions that he needs the answers to.

Once upon a time, John believed God existed—that He would and could light the way without showing His hand. But how can a broken man read the signs? Now, everything that is left of John’s life fits in the saddle bags of his Harley. John leaves the ministry and his teaching position and goes looking for a new life. After all, he had it all. A successful career, a wife, a family and close friends. But he threw it all away in a moment of stupidity. Now, John wants as many miles between him and Chicago as the famed Route 66 will allow. Will John find God’s purpose in the present even while he’s running from it?

SOMEWHERE FAST is a unique story, in that one doesn’t see too many books cross your path that have a middle-aged man facing a midlife crisis as the main character. I felt sorry for John even while I wanted to slap him and tell him not to run from his problems.

I was glad men crossed his path who could relate to him and give him some guidance, and I hoped that John would act on their advice.

There are some interesting parts in SOMEWHERE FAST which I plan on incorporating into my homeschooling, as the story brings out things which every young man (and woman) need to learn before they reach adulthood. SOMEWHERE FAST reads like a real life story, and to a certain extent it is based on true events, but the story itself is fiction. SOMEWHERE FAST is written in first person so the reader is truly able to see what John experiences. This is a character-driven story, not relying much on setting or even plot for the story-line. $12.99. 240 pages.
