SOUNDS OF SILENCE
By Elizabeth White
Review by Laura V. Hilton

Border Patrol agent Eli Carmichael recognizes that the deaf child he finds outside a Mexican orphanage is harboring a secret because of the terrified look in her eyes and the bloodstained knife she clutches. When an American citizen turns up knifed on the American side of the Rio De Grande, Eli decides he needs to keep this child safe so he can learn her secrets. So Eli turns to Isabel Valenzuela.

Isabel is struggling with her own issues. Her husband recently died, and she is trying to ready her house to list it for sale so she can take her young son and move closer to her parents. When Eli tries to talk her into hiding the young girl, Isabel fights it. She can’t hide a girl, her neighbors know she only has one child. Besides, what if her son talks?

Finally, Isabel gives in to Eli’s pleas and agrees to keep the girl for a short period of time. But it soon becomes apparent that someone will do anything to kill the girl—and nothing will stop them. Will the girl keep her secrets? Or will she die before they are told?

SOUNDS OF SILENCE is a compelling, fast action read. I read it all in one sitting and couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. The villian is clearly defined, but I had a hard time guessing where the leak between the officials and the Mexican bad guys occurred. I hoped they would find them before it was too late.

SOUNDS OF SILENCE is second in The Texan Gatekeepers series, but it easily stands alone. Readers will want to find a block of time where they are able to read this book straight through as it will demand attention. I am looking forward to the third book in the series, On Wings of Deliverance, coming in April 2006. $4.99. 250 pages.
