SUSPICION OF GUILT

By Tracey V. Bateman

Review by Laura V. Hilton

Denni Mahoney has worked hard to build a home for troubled girls—girls that are too old for the foster care system and too young to be out on the street. But someone is working hard to destroy all that Denni has built—theft, flood, and now fire are threatening the home.

Detective Reece Corrigan is trying to figure out what was going on at the Mahoney House—and to keep Denni and the other occupants safe. However, since Denni hasn’t reported most of the incidents occurring at the home, his chief wants Reece to wrap up the case.

When Denni’s girls head up Reece’s suspect list, Denni jumps to their defense. Is it possible one of them is trying to destroy her home? Is Denni’s life in danger?

SUSPICION OF GUILT is the second book in the Mahoney Sisters series. Set around the Rolla, Missouri, area, locals will be able to recognize their town. Denni is an interesting heroine, all fire and bravo when someone threatens her girls, and all motherly when someone needs her attention. Reece is fighting his own problems. A foster child himself, he was put on the streets too early and never bonded with a family. He fights his attraction to Denni with all his being.

I never quite got a handle on how old the characters where. Denni seemed like she wasn’t much older than the foster girls she cares for, while all the girls in Denni’s care acted like Reece was a grandfatherly type figure, bald and everything, when they recognized Denni’s attraction to him—then the teasing names they called him, like hottie, didn’t seem to fit.

I didn’t care for SUSPICION OF GUILT as much as I liked the first book in this series Reasonable Doubt but still SUSPICION OF GUILT is an enjoyable read. I couldn’t put the book down and am looking forward to reading the third book in the series. $4.99. 251 pages.
