Mara’s trials started, as far as she knew, when she was nine. Her grandmother died; she had to leave the farm she called home; her aunt who took her in was a poor homemaker and didn’t often seem to care about her; she had no friends. She was so desperate for companionship that she didn’t obey her instincts about General, a boy a few years older than her, and she ended up paying for the oversight dearly and repeatedly. She did at last make a true friend: Camilla. Together they wile away the days of summer, but then Mara’s life turns upside down yet again.
The underlying question that plagues her is as simple as who she is. No one will tell her anything about her parents, even when she ends up living with someone who is apparently a relative of some kind. Through every major change in her life, her identity becomes more important to her. How can she trust a God who seems only to take away, never to give? How can she trust when she’s been hurt so often? How can she find strength within herself is she doesn’t know who she is?
Mary E. DeMuth created a story as heart-wrenching as it is captivating. Entirely from the point of view of nine-year-old Mara, the reader will get caught up in her life and trials and not want to put down the book until they know what happens to her. Having a young, vulnerable heroine makes her fears more real, more believable, and more clutching. We all remember bigger-than-life bullies and heroes from our childhood, and Mara’s story if full of both the sweet and the beyond-bitter aspects of child’s life.
Though the main character is young, this is not a book for children or the faint of heart. Because it deals with issues of abuse, it may make some readers uncomfortable, though it deals with these things sensitively and thoughtfully. DeMuth did her research, and this story is certain to touch your heart. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a deeper, emotionally-investing read.
