Jamie McKie is anxious to return to his ancestral home in Glentrool and claim his inheritance. He is haunted by a shameful past and uncertain of his future. But before Jamie can return home, he must outwit his devious Uncle Lachlan and confront the two men he fears most – his own brother, Evan, and his father, Alec. Jamie also has two women depending on him, sisters who are at odds with each other. Leana is the oldest, his first wife, and the mother of his firstborn son. Since Leana tricks Jamie into marrying her instead of her sister Rose, the priests declare their marriage illegal, and demands Leana give up her child and leave the area. So Jamie is able to marry his sweetheart, the younger, more beautiful, Rose. When Leana comes back on the scene, all is not happy-ever-after. The two sisters vie for Jamie’s affections. And Leana wants her son, in spite of the priest’s orders. What happens with Leana discovers that Rose is expecting Jamie’s child? Will Jamie be able to take his growing family and return home? Or will the family be torn apart by strife? WHENCE COMES A PRINCE is an enjoyable read, with lovable characters and lots of action to keep the reader’s interest. Leana’s dilemma breaks the reader’s heart, but at the same time, they will sympathize with Jamie and Rose. I loved the story all the way through; my only complaint is that the story seems to be based on the story of Jacob, Esau, and Leah and Rachel in the Bible, and I knew in advance what would happen. It was like Ms. Higgs took the Biblical story and rewrote it with different names, setting, and time period, but left the events all the same. That disappointed me until I realized that was Ms. Higgs intentions all along. Nevertheless, WHENCE COMES A PRINCE is a good book. Even if readers are familiar with the Biblical account of this story, they will want to read Fair is the Rose and Thorn in my Heart first to connect with the characters and discover what happens as WHENCE COMES A PRINCE is a continuation of the story. $13.99. 560 pages.
